Summary

In the past decade, Jurisdictional Approaches (JAs) have gained momentum as a promising way to govern land use in response to the urgent challenges of sustainable agro-commodity production. These initiatives bring together multiple stakeholders in a participatory approach – with governments playing a prominent role – to align environmental, social, and economic goals, promoting sustainable practices across entire regions.

However, as these approaches evolve and build momentum fundamental questions remain:

  • In what ways do JAs contribute to achieving sustainability objectives?
  • How can JAs support participation and social inclusion?
  • What are the biggest challenges facing jurisdictional approaches, and what approaches can help to work through such obstacles?
  • What challenges exist in assessing their success, and what should participants and researchers focus on to overcome these?

In this learning event, we explore these questions by sharing the latest research insights and breaking down the complexities of JAs. We also highlight real-world examples from professionals working in the field.
