Summary
This study was conducted in Kenya to compare GlobalGAP certified and non-certified snap bean farms in terms of their sustainability practices and profit efficiency. By examining 429 smallholder farmers, the researchers found that GlobalGAP certified farms generally used less pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers than non-certified farms. They conclude that by complying with conservation practices, GlobalGAP certified farmers gain access to sustainable supply chains and recieve higher prices for their produce. However, the costs of complying with certification standards are still high for smallholders.
