Summary
Given the depletion of wild aquatic resources and ecosystems, aquaculture will play an increasingly important role in meeting growing demand. Aquaculture, if developed more responsibly, has the significant potential to meet the food demands of a growing global population in a way that is sustainable, nutritious and equitable. This paper reviews available information on responsible aquaculture development holistically, bringing together scientific research, global frameworks, previous and ongoing industry initatives, government strategies and case studies. It uses this synthesis of current knowledge to generate some key priority areas for consideration towards the sustainable growth of aquaculture.
