Summary
This report analyses the extent to which producers are included in the governance of agricultural standards and recommends ways for standard-setting organizations to give producers opportunities to help steer their course. The analysis evaluates six VSS-setting organizations (VSSSOs) and their governance structures, employing principles of inclusion to assess producer involvement. While there are signs of progress, the report indicates significant room for improvement in ensuring producers have meaningful input into decisions affecting their lives within VSS governance systems. The report proposes various measures to enhance producer involvement, such as granting voting rights and veto power, establishing producer-led networks, providing training, ensuring consultation processes, increasing transparency, and fostering open communication channels.
