Summary
The study investigates the links between agricultural exports, labour markets, Fairtrade and poverty reduction.Using mixed methods data collected from coffee and flower sites in Ethiopia and coffee and tea sites in Uganda, the authors illuminate the poor working conditions of working conditions of those employed in research sites dominated by Fairtrade producer organisations. They find negative effects of Fairtrade on workers employed by both large scale and smallholder employers, which they attributed to (a) poor monitoring of labour standards
