Cocoa and forests initiative annual report: Ghana

Monitoring report
Research report

Published September 2024 by World Cocoa Foundation (WCF). Authored by World Cocoa Foundation (WCF)

Summary

The report focuses on the 2023 progress of the Cocoa & Forests Initiative (CFI) in Ghana, which aims to halt deforestation, restore degraded landscapes, and promote sustainable cocoa production. The initiative reports significant milestones across three pillars: forest protection, sustainable cocoa farming, and community engagement. Key highlights include the launch of the Asunafo-Asutifi Landscape Programme, the registration of farmers in a national traceability system, and piloting a Cocoa Monitoring System. The CFI results show over 35,800 hectares of new cocoa agroforestry established, technical support provided to over 100,000 individuals, and improved land tenure security for 7,197 farmers. Moving forward, the report recommends advancing collaborations for forest protection, finalising a Tree Registration Manual, and developing sustainable cocoa production strategies.
