Summary

This study examines the factors influencing coffee producers' choice between selling to intermediary purchasers or joining a Fairtrade and organic co-operative in Chiapas, Mexico. The paper concludes that organic production requirements act as a barrier to joining co-operatives, however other aspects such as the co-operative's payment systems, and level of trust in co-operative leadership also affect decision-making.
