Summary
This study was commissioned and financed by UTZ Certified to evaluate the impact of UTZ certification on coffee farmers in Colombia. The authors analyse quantitative data using PSM in combination with A DiD approach. The analysis is complemented by a set of interviews with key stakeholders involved in the implementation of the UTZ program. The authors identify positive effects on key
socioeconomic and environmental indicators than conventional
producers and in the aggregate indexes used to measure the
overall impact on the social, environmental and economic
dimensions of sustainability. The study also finds that UTZ producers had a more positive and
optimistic attitudes towards their socioeconomic situation, however these
differences could not be wholly attributed to participation in
the UTZ program.
